Microwaves Ovens, Are They Safe?

About 5 years back I used to buy what seemed like healthy microwave meals.  I was a tired parent looking for some help with dinner.

Once in a while I'd give myself a break and heat up some of the microwave meals.  Unfortunately heating up enough meals for 4 people one meal at a time actually takes a long time.  I remember that a couple of times I bought the large microwaveable lasagna.  It took a long time to cook, maybe even half an hour.

What I realized after a few times of eating microwaved food was that I felt more tired.  I blew it off assuming it must all be in my head, until I came across some research.

The research was a study on the effects of microwaved food on the body.  The research shared how the molecules in food are slammed together when microwaved, causing damage and changes to the food itself.

"As these microwaves generated from the magnetron bombard the food, they cause the polar molecules to rotate at the same frequency of millions of times a second.  All this agitation creates molecular friction, which heats up the food.  The friction also causes substantial damage to the surrounding molecules, often tearing them apart or forcefully deforming them.  The scientific name for this deformation is 'structural isomerism'."*1

What I found even creepier is that when microwaved food is eaten it causes changes to our blood.

Dr. Hertel and Dr. Bernard H. Blanc of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the University Institute for Biochemistry did a study together. The scientists had volunteers eating a variety of foods that were both microwaved and not microwave, for periods of 2 to 5 days.  Blood samples were taken from the volunteers both before and after eating.

"The scientific conclusion showed that microwave cooking changed the nutrients in the food and that changes took place in the participants' blood that could cause deterioration in the human system."
"Significant changes were shown in the blood samples from the intervals following the food cooked in the microwave oven.  These changes included a decrease in all hemoglobin and cholesterol values, especially the ration of HDL (good cholesterol) and LDL (bad cholesterol) values.  Lymphocytes (white blood cells) showed a more distinct short-term decrease following the intake of microwaved food than after the intake of all other variants."*2

Each of these factors points to degeneration in the body. Eating food that has been microwaved can raise your bad cholesterol while lowering your good cholesterol, and reduces the bodies white blood cell count which is a major line of self defense for our bodies.  The level of leukocytes was shown to increase when microwaved food was consumed, which is commonly a sign of poisoning and cell damage.

Dr. Hertel also found that "Because of the force involved, the cells are actually broken, there by neutralizing the electrical potentials, the very life of the cells, between the outer and inner side of the cell membranes. Impaired cells become easy prey for viruses, fungi and other microorganisms.  The natural repair mechanisms are suppressed and cells are forced to adapt to a state of energy emergency-- they switch from aerobic to anaerobic respiration.  Instead of water and carbon dioxide, the cell poisons hydrogen peroxide and carbon monoxide are produced."

In 1993 Dr. Hertel was issued a gag order by a powerful trade organization, then convicted for "interfering with commerce" and prohibited from further publishing his results.  The decision was later reversed in 1998 by the European Court of Human Rights.

A Stanford University study showed that "microwaving breast milk, even at a low setting, can destroy some of it's disease-fighting capabilities."

In 1991 there was a lawsuit in Oklahoma. A woman named Mrs. Levitt went in for hip surgery and received a blood transfusion.  Blood is routinely warmed, but not in microwaves.  The blood she received was needed quickly so the nurse decided to microwave it.  The microwave altered the blood so much that it killed her.

According to researchers, male and female hormone production is shut down and/ or altered by continually eating microwaved foods.

In a comparative Study of Food Prepared Conventionally and in The Microwave Oven, published by Raum and Zelt stated that "Microwaved food contains both molecules and energies not present in food cooked in the way humans have been cooking food since the discovery of fire."

Old People On Bench
Enjoy preparing food the way it's been done for centuries,
to maintain the nutrients in the food, and a healthier body.
According to Dr. Lita Lee every microwave converts substances cooked in them to dangerous organic-toxic and carcinogenic products.

She reports that foods such as meat, some amino acids in milk and grains, thawing frozen fruits, raw cooked or frozen vegetables, and plants, especially root vegetables (like potatoes, carrots, etc.) all became carcinogenic when microwaved.  That means they have to potential to cause cancer.

Russian researchers reported a decreased food value of 60-90% in foods that were microwaved.  Some of the changes were:
  • Decreased bio availability of vitamin B complex, vitamin C, vitamin E, essential minerals and lipotropics factors in all food tested.
  • Various kinds of damage to many plant substances, such as alkaloids, glucosides and nitrilosides.

So we can see how using a microwave to cook food greatly decreases the nutritional value of the food, damages the molecules in food, raises bad cholesterol and lowers good cholesterol, lowers the body's white blood cell count, disrupts hormones, and most concerning can increase the risk of getting cancer.

Healthy alternatives to using a microwave are:
  • Using a tea kettle or pan to heat up beverages.
  • Using an oven. (I take microwave lasagna out of the plastic container and heat it up in the oven)
  • Try using a toaster oven.
  • Steam vegetables to help retain as much nutrient value as possible.
Here are some more great tips for reheating food without a microwave.

Here's to great health, and enjoying our food!
